How do I measure the exact time men and women spend talking in meetings, using Time To Talk?
Time To Talk measures the average speaking time for men and women in meetings and is available as an app for iPhone and iPad. Conversations are not recorded, only analyzed in real time and no data is saved.
While the Time To Talk analyzes a conversation the spectogram at the top of the screen will be black. As soon as the classification of the sex of the speaker is definitive the spectogram will turn blue for women and red for men. Time To Talk analyzes voices on the basis of biological sex.
This is how You measure the speaking time for men and women in a meeting, using Time To Talk:
1. Set the measuring iPhone / iPad into airplane mode to avoid interruptions due to incoming calls.
2. Enter the number of men and women participating in the meeting via the PLUS and MINUS signs at the bottom of the screen.
3. Press the PLAY button to start the measurement.
4. Place the measuring iPhone or iPad in a central location.
5. If participants come or go, adjust the number of men and women via the PLUS and MINUS signs at the bottom of the screen.
6. Press the PAUSE button to end or pause the measurement.
7. Note the final result. Alternatively, using the SHARE button, you can send the result via email or SMS.

Time to Talk reports one percentage for men and one percentage for women.
When the percentages are 50 / 50, the average speaking time of a man equals the average speaking time of a woman.
Here is an example for You who wish to deep diver into the concepts:
A meeting with 2 men and 3 women lasted for 54 minutes. Men spoke for 26 minutes and women spoke for 28 minutes.
The average speaking time for a person of unkown gender is 54 minutes / 5 persons = 11 minutes.
Take this number and multiply by 2.
11 * 2 = 22
The average speaking time for a man was 26 minutes / 2 men = 13 minutes.
The average speaking time for a woman was 28 minutes / 3 women = 9 minutes.
The per cent for men will be 13/22 = 59
The per cent for women will be 9/22 = 41
These percentages are relative to twice the average speaking time of a person of unknown gender.
The average speaking time of a person of unknown gender is equal to the meeting time divided by the number of speakers.
The percentage for men show the relation between the average speaking time of a man and twice the average speaking time for person of unkown gender.
The percentage for women show the relation between the average speaking time of a woman and twice the average speaking time for person of unkown gender.
Again: when the percentages are 50 / 50, the average speaking time of a man equals the average speaking time of a woman.
